Description
Junipero Serra Museum located in Presidio Park, one of the most familiar landmarks in San Diego. Sitting on top of a hill with wide view of San Diego and recognized as the site where California began in 1769 when Spanish Franciscan missionary, Father Junipero Serra, established Alta California's first mission and presidio (fort) which is now a national historic landmark.
The original mission where the museum in now, was built in July of 1769 but remained at this location for only five years because water supply was not sufficient fo crops and the soil not fertile enough. The land for the building of the museum and Presidio Park grounds now on the site was bought and building overseen by John White Marston, an early San Diego resident between the years of 1928-1929 to showcase the collection of the San Diego History Center. The building was designed by William Templeton Johnson using Spanish Revival architecture to resemble the early California missions. It is considered to be the finest example of Mission style architecture in San Diego and reflects the strong cultural sense of Spanish colonials.
